Question: Why do African Americans deserve reparations, but Native Americans don’t?
African Americans are entitled to reparations in the form of financial payments, educational resources, and other forms of assistance to address and correct the lingering effects of hundreds of years of enslavement, racial segregation, and continued systemic racism in the United States. The legacy of slavery and racial violence suffered by African Americans has been profoundly damaging, and reparations can help to bring about greater justice and healing for those affected. Native Americans, on the other hand, have a unique historical relationship with the United States that cannot be compared to that of African Americans. While Native Americans were subjected to violent displacement, exploitation, and neglect, the United States government has also taken some specific steps to recognize and repair the harm done to them, such as instituting numerous treaties and enacting special legislation. Additionally, many Native American tribes have established their own legal systems, economies, and other institutions, which has allowed them to maintain their cultural and tribal identities. As such, reparations for Native Americans is a complex issue that can’t be addressed in the same way as reparations for African Americans.
