Achieving a degree is important to me because of the opportunities that it opens up. It can increase one’s earning potential and also open up opportunities to pursue different career paths. It is a way to learn more and gain skills that can be applied to different facets of life. My ultimate goal after graduation is to use the skills I acquire from college to make a difference in my community. I want to be able to use the knowledge I gain to help implement positive changes in my community that can benefit the people of all ages. I want to be able to use the experiences and resources I have at my disposal to make a difference and help community members make the most of their lives. I have experienced a significant setback in life when I had to take a break from school in order to take care of my sick father. When my father was diagnosed with cancer, I knew I had to step up and be there for him despite the fact that it would mean I had to put my academic plans on hold. During that time, I had to learn how to balance taking care of my father and taking care of my own mental, physical, and emotional well-being. I had to learn how to cope with the emotions of sadness, anger, and fear while also finding ways to support myself. Fortunately, I have been able to take the skills I have gained in taking care of my father during his illness and apply them to my own life. I have learned to be more patient, understanding, and empathetic when things don’t go my way. I have also learned how to be resilient and use my resources to tackle difficult tasks. I’ve become more organized in terms of managing my time and goal setting. These skills have helped me to stay focused on finishing my degree and achieving my goals despite the setbacks I have faced.
