Once upon a time, in the heart of Kansas, there lived a lively lad of six named Billy. He was of average height for his age with a tuft of red hair that resembled a mini fire pit glowing incessantly. Even though he was only six, his voice carried the timbre of maturity, surprising those who heard him speak. At night, he wore weathered Thomas the Train pajamas, a relic of his deceased grandmother's gift, with soft white socks adorning his petite feet. One ordinary night, as he nestled into the warmth of his race-car-shaped bed, he gradually drifted into the realm of dreams. The next morning, Billy awoke, not in his bed in Kansas but on an unfamiliar couch in a living room designed in minimalistic style, housed somewhere in the vibrant streets of modern Massachusetts. His body didn't feel right — it was larger, curvier and oddly feminine. He looked down at himself only to find a silk lilac dress hugging him, mid-thigh length, subtly adorned with small sequins. He looked at his hands to see long, elegant fingers, their nails painted a deep maroon, tightly clutching a remote. His feet were encased in black platform sandals, shiny and new. A glance in the mirror revealed red lipstick paired with sultry, smokey eye makeup. His reflection showed a woman in her early 30s. His mind was spinning when a man, seemingly the boyfriend of the woman, stirred from his slumber next to him. Billy's mind, distraught and filled with chaos, tried to voice this madness, tried to ask for his mother. Instead, he found himself saying, "John, your snoring was so loud last night. You sure need to get that checked." His voice was melodic and rich, far away from the chirpy tones of his actual self. Billy was taken aback, he had never said anything like that before! As the day unfolded, he unwillingly continued to speak and behave like the woman. He found himself complaining about his platform sandals being tight when he had never worn, let alone comment on, such shoes before. And when John asked about the wrinkled state of his lilac dress, Billy found himself replying, "I must've slept in the dress after last night's party." Billy's feeling of alienation intensified when he came across a familiar face. It was his cousin, Jenny, now seemingly older than him. He was bewildered & wanted to ask about his family but instead said, "Jenny, don't you think it's time we settled that loan?" Everything around him, his outfits, his lipstick, the tattoo of a rose vine on his, now her, forearm, became constant reminders of a reality he never anticipated. As he satisfied his longing for his former life with stolen glances at his Kansas state family pictures, he couldn't help but wish that things could go back to how they used to be. But the truth remained that little Billy from Kansas was now Sophia from Massachusetts, ever caught in the emotional paradox of longing and acceptance.
