Black Canary, well-known for her sonic scream and impressive hand-to-hand combat skills, was patrolling the quiet streets of Gotham City one evening. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a young, fresh-faced criminal nervously fidgeting as he attempted to rob a convenience store. Noticing the fear in his eyes, an unusual sympathetic feeling washed over Black Canary. When the novice criminal pointed the gun tremblingly towards her, she let down her guard and pretended to be terrified. Instead of using her superior fighting skills, she feigned surrender to make the young offender feel in charge. Taking her cue, the criminal ordered Black Canary into the backroom of the store. In an attempt to further encourage his illusion of control, Black Canary suggested he tie her up to keep her out of the way. Working with what he could find, he used a pair of tights and long socks to constrain her wrists, arms, legs, and ankles. Black Canary let him, experiencing an odd sensation of vulnerability that she had not felt since her first days on patrol. Minutes turned into hours, and Black Canary grew bored confined in the back room as the criminal rummaged through the store. Attempting to amuse herself, she began to cheekily tease him, prodding him about his inexperience and awkward robber technique. Driven to his wit's end by her relentless jesting, the criminal stuffed his used sock into her mouth, effectively gagging her. Seeing her pair of fishnets neglected on the floor, he utilized them to blindfold her. Black Canary struggled against her bonds, her muffled protests silenced by the sock gag. Much to her humiliation, she found the makeshift knots much more difficult to escape from than she had anticipated. The young criminal took tremendous satisfaction in her futile struggles. He arrogantly mocked her, "Can't believe I got a real-life superhero all tied up and gagged with a common sock!" Leaving her tied and blindfolded in a space dwarfed by shelves of grocery, the young criminal made his escape, leaving Black Canary to her defeat. Eventually, she was found by the local police, surprised to find the strong crime-fighter in such a predicament. The incident served as a lesson to Black Canary about underestimating her opponents.
