Once upon a time, a young boy named Liam lived in the bustling state of New York. Born on a sunny day, 25th of February 2015, Liam was a picture of innocence at the age of 6. The lad stood 3 feet 10 inches tall and weighed approximately 45 pounds. He had coal-black, curly hair which fell just above his shoulders and big, hazel eyes that twinkled with endless curiosity. His mother, Lily, only 25 years old, had celebrated her birthday on January 15th, making her birth year 1996. She weighed around 125 pounds, standing at about 5 feet 4 inches tall. She had long, wavy blond hair and enchantingly deep blue eyes. Lily was young and beautiful, inside and out. Liam's father, Luke, was no longer in their lives. Having been born on 4th October 1995, he was just a year older than Lily. He was a good 6 feet 2 inches tall, with a handsome stance, weighing around 180 pounds. His hair was a darker shade of blond, cropped short, and had piercing green eyes. Then there was his aunt Laura, born on December 12, 2000, standing at 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 115 pounds. Her hair was also short, dyed a vibrant red, and her eyes were a pleasant hazel, similar to Liam's. His uncle, Larry, although a busy man, had managed to see his 28th birthday on August 6th, 1993. A little taller than his sister, at 5 feet 6 inches, and slightly heavier at 156 pounds, Larry's head was crowned with tightly coiled brown hair and bedecked with bright brown eyes. Lastly, there was Grandma Lorraine, a woman of the 70s. She had been born on the 15th of April, 1975. Her youthful spirit was hinted at by her height of 5 feet and weight of approximately 150 pounds. Her once black hair had turned gray, and her soft brown eyes illuminated her face with wisdom. On a regular summer afternoon, Liam found himself heading to a salon located a few blocks from his house alone for the first time. He opened the door and was greeted by Ms. Kyung-Soon, the woman who ran the place. At the age of 61, her birth year being 1960, she was shorter than Grandma Lorraine but carried her 4 feet 10 inches with great pride. She had a sleek, Korean style pixie, coal-black hair with subtle shades of gray, enigmatic brown eyes and a slight build, weighing close to 100 pounds. Her February 2nd birthday made her an Aquarius. Kyung-Soon wore a sophisticated blazer over a white blouse, perfectly complemented by her Korean style pixie cut. Her feet were padded with platform sandals and her fingers were painted a vibrant red. She had an wedding ring on her hand and a myriad of jewelry adorning her body - bangles, bracelets, rings. "Oi you, wait here, me get stuff for hai' cut," Kyung-Soon said to Liam. Her English, splintered and halted, yet understandable. She left her platform sandals in the center of the room, as she excused herself for a while. While waiting for Kyung-Soon to return, Liam, slipped off his own shoes and socks, feeling the cold floor beneath his feet as he curiously wandered around the barber shop. "I gotta potty," he announced to himself, and innocently walked towards a hallway thinking it led to the toilet, looking around the new space, not watching the ground. Suddenly, he tripped over something, struggling for balance, and looked down to see that he had slipped into Kyung-Soon's platform sandals. Startled, he tried to remove the sandals when he felt a sudden chill. His clothes had evaporated, mysteriously disappearing from his body, causing him to shriek in fear. Frantically, he tried to tug the sandals off, when he felt a simmering pain creeping from his little toes, creeping up to his shins. Looking down, he saw his feet mature, horrifyingly. The rough skin, the dark nails coated with bright red polish, resembled Kyung-Soon's. He yanked off the sandals, a bead of sweat trickling down his forehead, but the changes didn't stop. "I'm gonna miss Mommy and Grandma so much. I didn't do anything wrong, I just had to potty. I don't wanna be an icky girl!" he shrieked, in perfect little boy English. He suddenly realized he felt older, much older than Grandma, and tears welled up in his hazel eyes. Terrified, he began singing the song his mother had taught him to sing whenever he was afraid, “Hush, little baby, don’t say a word…” The room swam around him as the changes continued. His body began to morph in ways he could not understand, taking the form of a woman. “Momma’s gonna buy you a mockingbird…” His clothes began appearing, an identical outfit to the one Kyung-Soon wore. His song began changing too, his voice rang out in the crisp clip of the Korean language, singing out an old lullaby, “자장가를 울려요, 작은 아기…” which translated to “Sing a lullaby, little baby…” His fear began to dissolve as he finished singing. He looked down and saw the precise copy of Kyung-Soon’s outfit on his, sans her wedding ring, jewelry, and platform sandals. His mind felt fuzzy, his past memories swirling, mixing with something else, before settling down. His accent had magically morphed into a Korean one, completely erasing any trace of his former voice. He noticed his jewelry and wedding ring, right next to the sandals. He ambled over and started adorning himself, sliding a gold bangle over his wrist, fastening a silver necklace around his neck, and finally, he gently slid the wedding ring onto his third finger. Picking up her platform sandals, he walked towards a plush chair and sat down, pulling up his pant leg. He deftly slipped the right sandal onto the right foot before repeating the process on the left. Making sure they were firmly hugging his feet, he stood up. Readjusting his blouse and blazer, he patted down her hair back into place before heading back into the salon. He walked around, now stumbling in his sandals, yet he swiftly caught himself each time. He slid his foot back into the sandals, adjusting them to hug his feet more tightly. This was reality now, he had randomly removed all of his adornments and footwear, not wanting to intimidate the young boy with her sizable attire. She chuckled at the memory before looking around again, noting that the boy had disappeared. "Where little boy go?" she mused, her broken English echoing in the salon. She shrugged off the thought and continued to clean up her salon – rearranging the magazines on the coffee table, fluffing the pillows. She loved the 'thud' her sandals made each time she moved around. Resuming her sweeping, she found herself pausing to crouch and adjust her sandals again. Satisfied, she raised her head, seeing her reflection in a nearby mirror. With a beaming smile on her face, she whispered to herself, "Me love being woman." The broken English words added a quirkiness to her new-found reality.
