The impact of colonization (1850-1960s) While many might argue against the positives of colonization, it undeniably laid the groundwork for modernization. European colonizers introduced Western education, infrastructure like roads, railways, ports, modern health facilities, and legal systems, all constituting elements of modernization. Sometimes, it was met with resistance, as evidenced by revolutions such as the Mau Mau uprising against the British in Kenya (1952–1960) (Osborne, 2018). 2. Decolonization and independence (1950s-1970s) Decolonization initiated a wave of modernization as African nations began to govern themselves. Africa’s new leaders adopted modern economic and political systems that promoted development. Ghana was the first African country to gain independence from British colonial rule in March 1957, initiating a domino effect of independence movements across the continent (Nkrumah, 1973). 3. The formation and evolution of the African Union (1963-Present) The establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 and its transformation to the African Union (AU) in 2002 were significant markers of modernization. The growth of innovative tech hubs like Nigeria's Yabacon Valley and South Africa's Silicon Cape reflect a profound shift towards a technology-driven economy (Friederici, 2020). The reality of this transformation entails a complex interplay of relationships between foreign influence, internal dictation, and regional collaborations. Advances in technology, political autonomy and socio-economic development have undeniably marked stages of Africa's transition towards modernity.
