Question: Tell me a story about 15 year old Jerry. Jerry had just moved to town and needed a job. Not knowing the area, he responded to the first ad he saw. Talking to the manager, Jerry was told basic things about the store that were typical and soon he was hired. On his first day, he was called back by the manager and told to sign a paper. Asking what it was, the manager didn't talk. As Jerry did, the manager then revealed what it was. Body-swap shopping where if a customer wants you to shop for them, they can switch bodies with you so you can or if a customer wants you to go out to their car, they can swap bodies with you. If an old person wants to, they can swap bodies with you. Jerry was nervous at the technology and hoped it would never happen to him. Not long after his first shift, Jerry was told to help a Hispanic mom with her 4 kids. The woman was wearing a red and yellow dress, matching red sandals and multiple bracelets and large jewelry. She then asked "I want to swap" in Spanish. Jerry checked her ID and she ended up being older she looked. Hesitant, he agreed and shortly he found himself in the woman's body. He looked down at her large and list and started walking. The dress and shoes feeling weird and his new height bugging him. He really should have got another job instead.
Jerry certainly wasn't expecting that when he took the job, but he was determined to fulfill his responsibilities. The novelty of the job quickly wore off as he found himself constantly body swapping with customers. His life suddenly filled with narratives and realities of others. In one of the swaps, he was an 80-year-old retired pilot who needed medication from the pharmacy department; in another, he was a frustrated single mother running late for a family dinner, and desperately hunting for ingredients. This job was odd, uncomfortable at times and subtly invasive, but it also opened a window to humanity’s toughness, resilience, and quirks. Jerry began to learn more about the individuals in his community than he ever assumed he would. He got to experience their lives, their struggles, and their joys. It was a unique perspective on life that he hadn't expected. Jerry had to deal with all kinds of situations that were beyond his age and understanding. One day, Jerry found himself swapped with the mayor of the town, discovering the hidden political war that went behind the peaceful and friendly facade of the town. Another day, he swapped bodies with a celebrity visiting the town for a film shoot, and experienced the price of fame. Despite the weirdness of his daily experiences, he developed a new-found respect for individuals and their different experiences. Jerry began to see this job as a unique opportunity, a chance to live a thousand lives and grow with every experience - however uncomfortable and unexpected they might be. Although still startled by the capability of technology and its implications, Jerry committed himself to be a good sport and take every body swap experience as an opportunity to empathize with the residents of his new town. After all, it was absurd, unnerving but also enlightening at the same time. Over time, Jerry became a pivotal part of the community. And even when he was given the much-awaited promotion that would end his body-swapping experiences, he took a moment, thought about the richness of the experiences he was having, and declined. His job allowed him to connect with the community around him and this connection made him stay. In the end, Jerry concluded that sometimes life takes us down peculiar paths, but if we take the opportunity to learn from them, we might just find a unique perspective on life that is richer, more inclusive and much more interesting.
