The cruel and unjust system of American slavery has had an indelible negative imprint on Black Americans, both during and after the practice was abolished. Even after slavery's abolition, the deleterious economic, social, and psychological aftermath of centuries of legal subjugation has resulted in persistent inequalities and lasting trauma. Unfortunately, the United States has not done enough to make up for this horrific injustice and it is time for the country to take responsibility for the lasting and detrimental effects of slavery on African Americans by implementing slavery reparations. This essay will argue that slavery reparations should be implemented because of the lasting impacts of slavery on Black Americans, the economic benefits of slavery reparations, and the moral obligation to right past wrongs.
