This World Heritage site balances the needs of local communities, preserving wildlife populations, and satisfying the economic interests of tourism. Outside of Africa, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia offers another example of sustainable management of heritage sites. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority implements zoning to control human activities like fishing and tourism. It also carries out regular monitoring programs to assess the health of the reef. This requires regular maintenance, control on human activities, and efforts to enhance local community participation and education. Green et al. (2019) in their study, stated that sustainable management of heritage sites can be achieved by boosting community involvement in decision-making, ensuring economic benefits reach local communities and introducing proper controls on visitor numbers and activities.
