How to Address Barriers to Teen Success

A teen recently failed a project to start a hobby shop in their neighborhood. Cognitive Barriers: The teen may lack the necessary business knowledge and experience to run a business. Affective/Motivational Barriers: The teen may feel overwhelmed by the scope of the project, or lack motivation to complete it because they may not feel it is a worthwhile endeavor. Resources Barriers: The teen may lack access to resources such as the necessary capital or equipment to start the shop. Political Barriers: The teen may not have the necessary knowledge of the local regulations regarding opening a business in the area, or may not have the funds to pay the necessary fees to obtain the necessary permits. How could the barriers have been addressed differently? The teen could have done more research into the local regulations and fees needed to open the business, and could have sought out resources such as business mentors or grants to help fund their project. They could have asked for help from friends or family to provide resources such as equipment or capital to help get the business off the ground. Finally, the teen could have broken the project down into smaller, more manageable tasks to make it feel less daunting, and set smaller goals to help stay motivated throughout the process.
