Jonny lives in the freezer in the ice tray waiting to quench the thirst of his owners. Unbeknownst to Jonny, his journey is about to leap into motion due to exposure to thermal energy! Source of Thermal Energy: As the door to the freezer opens, Jonny is exposed to conduction and convection. The warm air rushes around him, providing him with a thermal energy boost. Solid to Liquid Transformation: As the thermal energy is absorbed by Jonny, his frozen structure begins to break apart and his particles start to move more freely. He is gradually melting from a solid to a liquid. The increased temperature causes the molecules to vibrate faster and farther apart, until they eventually become a liquid. Liquid to Gas Transformation: As the temperature continues to rise, the particles of Jonny’s liquid structure move farther away and quicker. This causes the liquid to evaporate, or turn into a gas. Jonny joins the vapor above the pot and is carried away to the air. Conclusion: Jonny the Ice Cube experienced a transformation from a solid to a liquid to a gas as he was exposed to thermal energy. Jonny’s adventure shows us the importance of thermal energy in changing the phase of matter, as well as the importance of staying hydrated!
