Dear Journal, It's been weighing heavy on my heart lately the way my mother, a toxic presence in my life, blatantly shows favoritism towards my older brother, Mondrell. He's 29 now and I'm 17, but ever since I can remember, he's been the golden child in my mother's eyes. It's frustrating to see how easily she brushes off my accomplishments, like the fact that I'm taking early college classes in psychology and English. Speaking of English, my teacher gave us a four-page essay to complete and it's taking me forever to finish. I've been working on it for multiple days and have been up late into the evening trying to get it done. It's not that the assignment is particularly difficult, it's just time-consuming. But what really gets to me is the lack of support from my mother. While my brother can do no wrong in her eyes, I feel like I have to constantly prove myself to her. Even when I do succeed, she downplays it or finds a way to attribute it to my brother's influence. It's exhausting to deal with, but I'm trying to focus on what I can control. I'm proud of myself for taking on advanced coursework and pushing myself academically. I know that my hard work and dedication will pay off in the long run, even if my mother doesn't see it.
