Once upon a time, five-year-old Kate was spending her summer vacation with her sixty-five-year-old Grandma Jeanie. Jeanie had rules that were as inflexible as steel chains, especially one in particular - no cellphones when visiting grandma. "Sorry Kate. You know the rules. No phones while you're with Grandma," Jeanie said before swiping Kate's phone one sunny afternoon. Jeanie left soon after that to run errands and fetch a prescription. Curiosity piqued and feeling adventurous, Kate tip-toed into Jeanie's room. She found herself taken aback by the abundance of what she deemed 'old lady' clothes, jewelry, and shoes. As she rifled through the room, her eyes landed on a photograph that left her truly shocked. It was a younger version of her grandmother. "Grandma? Wow! She was so pretty," she whispered in amazement. In her distraction, she noticed her cell phone nestled high among Jeanie's belongings on a towering shelf. Not knowing any better, she forgetfully thumbed her previous hesitation and climbed up to retrieve it. Suddenly, she lost her balance, and Jeanie's purse fell from the shelf, landing on Kate's shoulder, her feet landing awkwardly in a pair of strap-on sandals. Despite her efforts, the sandals refused to be removed and the purse felt impossibly heavy. Her feet began to change, developing wrinkles and turning aged like her grandmother's. Before she knew it, her clothes dissipated into thin air. "No! I don't wanna become grandma! I just wanted to play on my phone!" she squealed. But her plea seemed to fall on deaf ears as her transformation progressed unabated. Her arms and legs wrinkled and lengthened, her torso morphed, and even her facial features morphed into Jeanie's. Equally startling, her memories started shifting. A tiny part of her still clung to her wish to reverse this strange transformation. But as she saw memories of herself being ‘Jeanie’ acting out Jeanie's mundane, 'old' routines, her hopes faded. In no time, she was swallowed by her new persona. Rubbing her temples, Jeanie looked around, a finger resting thoughtfully on her chin. She saw her reflection in the mirror and smiled, pleased with her outfit and bearing. But her contentment was short-lived. Her eyes fell on the cellphone left on the floor, and she picked it up, irritation visible on her face. "Kate disobeyed me and took her phone back without my consent or my permission. Unacceptable!" she exclaimed. Her eyes landed on the photo taken from years ago and she sighed heavily. "I still remember when this photo was taken. It must've been 1982 and I must've been 24 here. I was so beautiful then. Really wish I wasn't so damn ugly now," she lamented. With that, Jeanie left her house to continue her errands, oblivious of her grandchild's whereabouts, her memories of being five-year-old Kate vanished like vapor.
