"Look at these wrinkles, for crying out loud!" 8. "I shouldn’t get this kind of treatment." 82. The cashier apologized again. 83. Helen wasn’t having it. 84. "Don’t worry about it miss, I’ll make sure not to offend you next time." 85. Helen turned to him in disdain. "You better not. Treat a lady right!" 86. Helen walked to the manager and complained. 87. "I’m Helen, and I’m old. This is no way to treat aged customers." 88. She got home, groceries in hand. 89. "Emily, get your ass in here to help with these groceries!" she yelled. 90. She clarified, "These snacks and drinks are only for after dinner, you hear?" 91. "If I catch you sneaking them, you’ll be grounded or worse." 92. Helen poured herself a glass of Jack Daniel's. 93. She sat on the couch, setting her purse beside her. 94. Kicking her feet up on the table, she relaxed, still in her flip flops. 95. There was a knock on the door. 96. Helen didn’t want to deal with it. "Get lost!" 97. Emily snuck a snack and a drink as soon as Helen wasn’t looking. 98. Helen looked down and saw the familiar sight of her flip flop-wearing feet. 99. She looked up to see her mom standing with hands on her hips. 100. "I told you those were for after dinner," Helen chided. 101. Emily looked guilty, with a Dorito in her mouth. 102. "Well, what are you still waiting for? Put those back," Helen scolded. 103. Emily nodded, placing the snack and drink back on the counter. 104. Helen glared. "Do you understand the rules now?" 105. Emily mumbled, "Yes, Mom." 106. Helen sighed, "Good. Now, go do your homework." 107. Emily walked away, and Helen sipped her Jack Daniel's contentedly. 108. She revels in her casual authority, feeling complete in her skin. ... And thus, Joey was lost eternally, as Helen continued to embrace her matronly role, never remembering her younger days as a boy.
